Toyota has unveiled a prototype hydrogen fuel-cell pickup truck based on the overseas-market Hilux. Developed by Toyota Motor Manufacturing U.K. and funded in part by the U.K. government, the prototype is essentially a Hilux fitted with a fuel-cell powertrain derived from the Toyota Mirai fuel-cell sedan.

The hydrogen tanks provide an estimated 372 miles of range, and they are supplemented by a battery pack mounted in the bed. The prototype will be evaluated by partner company Ricardo, after which a decision will be made on whether to proceed with production. If approved, Toyota says the pickup could launch in the second half of this decade.
