BorgWarner, a global leader in automotive technology solutions, has embarked on an exciting venture by supplying Li Auto with its cutting-edge integrated drive module (iDM220) for the company’s latest line of new energy vehicles (NEVs). This marks BorgWarner’s inaugural iDM partnership in China and is currently featured in Li Auto’s L8 and L9 range-extended electric vehicle (REEV) models.
The iDM220 by BorgWarner is a sophisticated, highly-integrated electric drive module designed for operation at 400V. It impressively delivers a maximum power output of over 200 kW and an estimated peak torque of 4500 Nm. Boasting a harmonious blend of efficiency, smooth operation, and exceptional performance, the iDM leverages a compact, hairpin-wound stator with an outer diameter of 220 mm, seamlessly integrated with an off-axis gearbox and a 400V silicon-based inverter. This integration significantly reduces the system’s overall weight and size, contributing to an optimized driving experience.
Every subsystem featured within the iDM is a testament to BorgWarner’s technological prowess and is available either as a fully integrated module or as stand-alone solutions, catering to the specific needs of new energy vehicles. The iDM is expertly manufactured at BorgWarner’s Wuhan facility in China, utilizing inverters sourced from the BorgWarner Suzhou plant. Additionally, BorgWarner’s Tianjin plant indirectly supplies the traction motor and generator motor for Li Auto’s L7, L8, and L9 models, further highlighting the company’s comprehensive support for Li Auto’s NEV lineup.
Expanding its impact beyond this collaboration, BorgWarner has been chosen by a prominent East Asian original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to provide electric motor stators and inverters for the OEM’s upcoming electric vehicle platform, set to commence production in mid-2025. Employing cutting-edge stator winding technology, the permanent magnet synchronous drive motor promises to deliver industry-leading power and torque density, accompanied by peak efficiencies surpassing 95%.
In essence, BorgWarner’s strategic partnerships and innovative technologies underscore its commitment to driving forward the evolution of electric mobility, both in China and on a global scale.
