GMC is reportedly increasing production of its all-electric Hummer lineup, including the GMC Hummer EV Pickup and GMC Hummer EV SUV. Sources suggest that the company produced 2,439 electric Hummers in July, marking the third consecutive month with production figures above 2,000 units.
This surge in production is in line with General Motors’ commitment to increasing output, which had previously been limited due to supply chain challenges. The GM Factory Zero, where the Hummer EVs are manufactured, was offline for a period to prepare for the production of electric pickups, the Chevrolet Silverado EV, and GMC Sierra EV.
The reported production numbers indicate that GMC has produced a total of 16,088 electric Hummers since October 2021, including 11,058 units in the first seven months of 2023. These figures contrast with official delivery data, which reported only 49 units delivered in the first half of 2023 and less than 1,000 units through the end of June.
Unofficial production numbers by year are as follows:
- 2021 (Oct-Dec): 140
- 2022 (Jan-Dec): 4,890
- 2023 (Jan-Jul): 11,058
- Total: 16,088
With an average monthly production rate of 2,500 units, it is expected that customer deliveries will increase significantly starting in the third quarter of this year. This ramp-up in production could result in around 30,000 units produced annually, a substantial number considering the unique and high-end nature of the GMC Hummer EVs.
GMC closed reservations for the electric Hummers in September 2022, with over 90,000 units reserved, backed by $100 refundable deposits. As production continues to increase, the backlog of reservations is expected to persist into 2024.
GMC recently increased the price of the GMC Hummer EV Pickup by $1,600 for new orders, with the entry-level EV2X version starting at just under $100,000. This price increase comes as GMC works to meet the strong demand for its electric trucks.
The production surge of the GMC Hummer EV lineup is a positive sign for General Motors’ electric vehicle efforts, and it will be interesting to see if similar progress is made with other electric models in the company’s portfolio, such as the Cadillac Lyriq.
