Alpine is embarking on its transformation into an all-electric performance brand, and the A290_β concept is a significant step in this direction. This concept car, derived from the forthcoming Renault 5 EV, serves as a preview of a production model expected in 2024. It represents the first of three electric vehicles Alpine plans to introduce, alongside the GT X-Over crossover and a successor to the A110 sports car. Alpine’s future lineup will be divided into “lifestyle” and “sports car” categories, distinguished by three-number model names. The first digit indicates the vehicle’s size (e.g., 2 for a B-segment hatch), and the last two digits represent the type of vehicle (e.g., 10 for sports cars, 90 for lifestyle). The “β” symbol denotes that it’s a concept car.
The A290_β is a compact electric car with a powertrain featuring two motors on the front axle, providing torque vectoring for precise control. In terms of design, it shares similarities with the Renault 5 EV but incorporates aerodynamic enhancements, such as a front bumper with large air intakes and an integrated spoiler on the trunk lid. Inside, the A290_β features a unique three-seat layout, with a central front seat and two rear passenger seats behind it. All three seats are racing bucket seats. The concept is designed for track use, equipped with a roll cage and an arrow-shaped dashboard inspired by Formula 1 car nose cones. It forgoes screens for a small head-up display but is expected to feature a touchscreen in the production model.
The steering wheel takes inspiration from the Alpine F1 car, with a gamepad-like design featuring various buttons, including a “overtake” button providing a 10-second power boost for passing maneuvers. Alpine plans to include this feature in all its future electric models. While Alpine hasn’t officially confirmed power levels, the production version is expected to offer two motor outputs, one with 160 kW and another with around 200 kW. The concept boasts torque vectoring, multi-link rear axle suspension, and fine-tuned shock absorbers, springs, and anti-roll bars for a dynamic yet stable driving experience.
