The 2024 GMC Hummer EV has achieved the lowest MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) rating of any electric vehicle (EV) currently on sale. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had not previously posted range and MPGe ratings for the Hummer EV due to its weight exceeding the limit for EPA light-duty vehicle emissions and range testing. However, the official EPA range and MPGe ratings have now been posted for versions that fall within the weight allowance.
With the standard tires, both the 2024 GMC Hummer EV Pickup and SUV are rated at 314 miles of range and 53 MPGe combined. When equipped with optional mud-terrain tires for off-road capability, both versions are rated at 298 miles of range and just 50 MPGe combined.
MPGe is a metric used to compare the energy efficiency of electric vehicles to internal-combustion vehicles. It’s not only a measure of efficiency but also a way to assess the relative environmental impact of different propulsion types. The Hummer EV’s low MPGe rating highlights its energy consumption in comparison to other EVs.
While the Hummer EV may have a relatively low MPGe rating, it is aimed at a market that might not traditionally consider electric vehicles. Its weight and configuration could also allow General Motors to generate regulatory credits to offset the sale of heavier internal-combustion engine vehicles. Despite its environmental impact, the Hummer EV could serve as an EV halo model, attracting attention and potentially changing perceptions among consumers who might otherwise be less interested in electric vehicles.
