Honda and Acura Electric Vehicles to Embrace Tesla’s NACS Standard

Honda and its luxury brand Acura have announced their intention to adopt Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging connector for their upcoming electric vehicles (EVs). This move comes as a part of their efforts to provide an excellent electric vehicle ownership experience for their customers and to ensure reliable access to public charging. However, the implementation timeline for this transition depends on General Motors, as Honda’s first two electric models for North America are based on GM’s Ultium platform and will be produced at GM’s plants. The first models are expected to feature Combined Charging System (CCS) connectors and could switch to NACS connectors in 2025 or 2026.

This announcement adds Honda and Acura to the growing list of automakers that have committed to using Tesla’s NACS connector in North America. Other companies that have pledged to adopt NACS connectors include Ford, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Polestar, Volvo, Rivian, and Fisker. This move towards a common charging standard is aimed at enhancing interoperability and simplifying the charging experience for electric vehicle users.

Tesla introduced the NACS branding to its existing fast-charging standard and invited other EV brands to use it in November. It has since gained support from several major automakers and is also receiving regulatory backing in some regions, such as Texas, which requires NACS connectors for future state-funded charging sites.
