Polestar has revealed that their upcoming electric SUV coupe, the Polestar 4, will be the first production car to feature Mobileye’s Chauffeur eyes-off, hands-off autonomous driving technology. The system will be integrated by ECARX and has the potential to be fitted to future Polestar vehicles.
While the Polestar 4, set to be available in China now and globally in 2024, won’t initially have the Chauffeur autonomous driving tech, it will incorporate Mobileye’s SuperVision-based ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) from the start. This ADAS system will lay the foundation for the eventual integration of the Chauffeur system.
The Chauffeur system, based on Mobileye’s technology, will offer eyes-off, hands-off, point-to-point autonomous driving on highways, as well as eyes-on automated driving for other environments. It uses a combination of sensors, including cameras, radar, and lidar, to enable autonomous driving capabilities.
Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath highlighted that this technology will give Polestar 4 drivers the option to enable autonomous driving when desired, making journeys more enjoyable. The Polestar 4 itself is positioned between the Polestar 2 and Polestar 3, combining the design of a coupe with the space and comfort of a modern SUV.
The vehicle will be available with single- and dual-motor powertrains, with the dual-motor version producing 544 horsepower and being able to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 3.8 seconds. The starting price for the Polestar 4 is expected to be around $60,000 when it launches in North America in 2024.
