Rimac Nevera Breaks Tesla’s Nürburgring EV Lap Record by 20 Seconds

The Rimac Nevera, an electric hypercar from Croatian automaker Rimac Automobili, has set a new production electric car lap record at the Nürburgring, one of the world’s most famous racetracks. The Nevera completed a lap around the 20.6-kilometer (12.8-mile) track in just 7 minutes and 5.298 seconds, beating the previous record held by the Tesla Model S Plaid Track Pack.

The record-setting lap time was achieved by Croatian racing driver Martin Kodrić, who drove the Nevera on Michelin Cup2R tires. The lap time was confirmed by independent timing data, TÜV SÜD certification, and on-board telemetry.

The Nevera’s impressive performance is attributed to its powerful electric motors, which generate a combined output of 1.4 megawatts (1914 horsepower) and 1740 pound-feet of torque. The hypercar can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 1.74 seconds and reach a top speed of 258 mph (412 km/h). Its battery pack has a capacity of 120 kilowatt-hours.

Rimac CEO Mate Rimac commented on the achievement, stating that the Nevera has broken records multiple times in 2023, showcasing its capabilities and performance. The company also unveiled the Nevera Time Attack special edition at the Monterey Car Week in California, inspired by the car’s record-setting runs and featuring unique design elements.

While the Nevera’s lap time is a significant achievement, it’s important to note that the fastest production vehicle record at the Nürburgring is still held by the Mercedes-AMG One, with a time of 6 minutes and 35.183 seconds. Nonetheless, Rimac’s achievement highlights the performance potential of electric hypercars and their ability to compete with traditional internal combustion engine vehicles on the track.
