A recent study conducted by JD Power’s 2023 US Tech Experience Index has revealed that battery electric vehicle (BEV) owners are facing more problems with advanced features compared to owners of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. The study found that satisfaction is lower among BEV owners across 86 percent of modern features compared to ICE vehicles.
Some specific features faced more problems among BEV owners. For example, remote parking assistance had 27.4 problems per 100 BEVs, compared to 10.7 problems per 100 ICE vehicles. Interior gesture controls faced nearly 50 problems per 100 BEVs compared to 31.2 problems per 100 ICE vehicles.
The study also noted that BEVs, excluding Tesla, have more quality problems per 100 vehicles than their ICE counterparts. It found that innovation is more substantial among newer manufacturers like Tesla, Lucid, Rivian, and Polestar than legacy carmakers, although there are still issues with user experience.
The study highlighted that success in implementing advanced technologies would depend on flawless execution and a consistent user experience for both tech-savvy and non-tech-savvy users. JD Power listed the recipients of its Advanced Technology Award, with Genesis, Cadillac, and Lexus ranking highest for innovation. The study was based on answers from 82,472 owners of MY2023 cars surveyed after three months of ownership.
