Supplier Claims Disconnecting Drive Motors Can Enhance EV Range by 9%

Automotive supplier Magna has introduced a new hardware component called “eDecoupling” for EV powertrains. The eDecoupling device is designed to disconnect drive motors when their power is not needed, reducing energy consumption and drag-torque losses.

Magna claims that this technology can increase the range of electric vehicles by up to 9%. The device can be easily integrated into existing EV powertrain designs, can activate in less than 100 milliseconds, and is suitable for both EVs and hybrids.

It will be produced at Magna’s facility in Austria and will launch on vehicles from a German premium automaker. This technology could contribute to greater EV efficiency by addressing drag from inactive electric motors.
